You made it
to Dubai. Now
own every step.

The first 30 days decide everything โ€” whether you feel settled, confident, and ahead of the game, or drowning in government websites at midnight. This is the difference.

Already sorted. You're ahead of most people who land and figure it out as they go.

Get a UAE SIM card at the airportDone

Du and Etisalat both have kiosks in arrivals. Don't leave without one โ€” you'll need it immediately.

Our honest take: Etisalat (now 'e&') has better coverage nationwide. Du is cheaper for international calls. For most new residents, Etisalat wins. Prepaid at the airport: AED 55โ€“100. Upgrade to a monthly plan once your Emirates ID arrives โ€” you'll unlock much better data packages and pricing.

!
Apply for your Emirates IDDo this first

This single card unlocks your bank account, Ejari, driving licence โ€” practically everything. Every day you delay costs you. Go to a typing centre within 48 hours of landing.

Where to go: Any ICP-approved typing centre (Google 'Emirates ID typing centre near me'). Bring originals โ€” not photocopies โ€” of your passport, residence visa, and one passport photo.

What happens: They fill in the ICP form (~AED 30โ€“70, takes 15 min), book your biometrics appointment, give you a confirmation slip. Emirates ID arrives in 5โ€“10 working days.

The thing nobody tells you: Banks accept your confirmation slip reference number before the physical card arrives. Don't wait โ€” open your bank account the same week.
!
Open a bank accountWeek 1

No account, no salary. If you don't have your Emirates ID yet, a digital bank gets you set up in 10 minutes โ€” no ID required. Don't wait.

No Emirates ID yet? Open Wio Bank or Mashreq Neo โ€” 10 minutes on your phone, completely free, passport only. Use this to receive your first salary.

Once you have your Emirates ID: Emirates NBD is the most reliable full-service bank โ€” 1,000+ ATMs, best for salary accounts. FAB if you earn AED 10K+. HSBC if you need global banking.

Documents needed: Passport + residence visa + salary letter on company letterhead + any proof of address (hotel booking works).

๐Ÿ’ธ Use Wise for transfers home โ€” saves AED 200โ€“400 each time โ†’
๐Ÿ Week 2 โ€” settle in properly0 / 2 done
Register your EjariWeek 2

Your tenancy legally doesn't exist without this. Schools, banks, and visa renewals all need it. Don't let your landlord delay you โ€” you're entitled to this within days of moving in.

What it is: 'Ejari' means 'my rent' in Arabic. It's Dubai's mandatory tenancy registration โ€” a QR-coded certificate that proves you legally live where you say you do.

Who registers it: Your landlord or agent should do this. Push them. You can also self-register via the Dubai REST app.

Cost: AED 220. Time: Same day online, or next day at an Ejari centre.

You'll need it for: Bank accounts, Emirates ID, school enrolment, vehicle registration, visa renewal. Keep the PDF somewhere permanent.
Connect DEWA (electricity & water)Week 2

15 minutes on the DubaiNow app. You need your Ejari number first. Don't leave this until you're in the dark โ€” literally.

How to do it: Download the DEWA app or dewa.gov.ae โ†’ 'Move In / New Connection'. You need: Emirates ID, Ejari certificate, security deposit (AED 2,000 for apartments, AED 4,000 for villas). Activation within 24 hours.

District cooling: Many buildings use Empower or Emicool for AC โ€” separate from DEWA. Your landlord will tell you which applies. Register with them separately โ€” cooling is often your biggest bill in summer.

Sort your health insuranceMonth 1

Legally required in Dubai. Your employer provides the minimum โ€” it's almost never enough. One private hospital visit without real coverage costs AED 1,000โ€“5,000+. Don't learn this the hard way.

What your employer gives you: The Essential Benefits Plan (EBP) โ€” legal minimum. Covers basic emergencies but limits specialists, dental, mental health, and repatriation.

What expats actually want: International health insurance with access to Mediclinic, Cleveland Clinic, or American Hospital. Starts ~$150/month for an individual.

Best option: Allianz Worldwide Care is the most popular among long-term Dubai expats โ€” recognised everywhere, excellent claims process.

๐Ÿฅ Get a free Allianz expat quote โ€” takes 2 minutes โ†’
Convert your driving licenceMonth 1

Dubai without a car is Dubai on hard mode. If your home country is on the conversion list, you skip the test entirely. Most people don't know they qualify โ€” check before you book a single lesson.

Direct conversion (no test): UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and 30+ others. Go to any RTA-approved driving school with your foreign licence โ€” you leave with a UAE one in 1โ€“3 days.

Not on the list? Lessons + test required. Most expats pass within a few attempts. The test has improved significantly โ€” it's fair now.

What you need: Emirates ID + passport + original foreign licence + eye test (~AED 30 at any optical shop) + passport photo.

Cost: AED 400โ€“800 depending on nationality and tests required.

Tourist & Short-Stay Guide

Dubai in 3, 5 or 7 days.
Done properly.

Most people get to Dubai, see the Burj Khalifa, eat at a mall, and leave wondering what all the fuss was about. The people who love it know where to actually go. That's what this is.

Weekend in Dubai โœˆ๏ธ

3 days. Pick one neighbourhood, go deep โ€” don't try to see everything.

Arrive, get SIM at the airport
Etisalat tourist SIM โ€” AED 55 with 5GB. Works everywhere.
Download Careem before you need it
Cheaper than taxis. Better than trying to wave one down at midnight.
Day 1 morning: Old Dubai โ€” Al Fahidi & the Creek
The Dubai most tourists miss. Abra for AED 2, Gold Souk, Spice Souk. Go before 10am before the heat.
Day 1 afternoon: Museum of the Future
Book tickets in advance โ€” they sell out. The most extraordinary building interior you've ever been inside.
Day 1 evening: Dinner in DIFC, not near the Burj
Better food, better atmosphere, same skyline view โ€” without the tourist markup.
Day 2: Beach morning, desert safari evening
JBR or Kite Beach (free). Desert safari at dusk โ€” book through a reputable operator, not your hotel.
Day 3: Burj Khalifa at sunrise, not sunset
No queue, better light, AED 50 cheaper. Everyone who goes at sunset waits 90 minutes and pays more.
Before you land
๐Ÿ›‚
Visa on arrival? Most likely yes. Check yours
50+ countries including UK, USA, EU, India (with valid US/EU visa) get visa-on-arrival or eVisa. Check GDRFA official site โ€” not a third-party travel site that charges a "processing fee".
Check eligibility โ†’

Money: Cards work everywhere Tip
Dubai is almost entirely contactless. Carry AED 150โ€“200 cash for abras, street food, and markets. Everything else is tap-and-go.
๐ŸŒก๏ธ
When to go Essential
Octoberโ€“April is perfect. Mayโ€“September is brutal outside but survivable in air conditioning. Plan outdoor activities for early morning and evenings only in summer.
๐Ÿš‡
Getting around Our pick
Metro + Careem covers everything. Buy a Nol card at any Metro station (AED 6, rechargeable). Careem for anywhere the Metro doesn't reach โ€” cheaper and easier than taxis.

What to wear Know this
Dubai is liberal by Gulf standards. Beachwear at the beach, smart casual in malls. Cover shoulders and knees at mosques and souks. Common sense applies โ€” you'll be fine.
Business Travel Guide

You're here to do deals.
We'll handle the rest.

Dubai rewards people who show up prepared. Whether it's your first trip or your fifteenth, the details that trip people up are always the same. Here's how to avoid every single one of them.

What business travellers actually need

The things that make
or break the trip

The logistics that cost people meetings, deals, and credibility. How to get them right.

๐Ÿข
Where to set up meetings
DIFC and Downtown are the business districts. If someone says "meet in Dubai," they almost certainly mean one of these. A hotel lobby is not where serious meetings happen.
Best venues in DIFC โ†’
๐Ÿค
Business etiquette that matters
First meetings are relationship-building, not deal-closing. Bring physical business cards. Don't schedule on Fridays. Ramadan shifts everything โ€” plan around it.

WhatsApp calls are blocked
VoIP restrictions mean your usual workflow won't work. Your team back home needs to know this before you leave. Get a local SIM before you leave arrivals.

The working week is Sunโ€“Thu
The UAE weekend is Fridayโ€“Saturday. Book your return flight for Sunday morning, not Friday. Friday morning in the business district is a ghost town.

Where to stay for business
Stay in DIFC, Downtown, or Business Bay โ€” you'll halve your commute time. Avoid Marina unless your clients are based there.

Business trip checklist ๐Ÿ’ผ

The things that trip people up โ€” handled before you land.

โœ“
Book meetings before you arrive โ€” not after
Dubai decision-makers are busy. "I'll reach out when I land" means three days in your hotel room.
Get a local SIM at the airport โ€” WhatsApp calls are blocked
Etisalat business data SIM at arrivals. AED 100. Your team needs to know this before you leave.
Check if it's Ramadan โ€” everything shifts
Shorter hours, no lunch meetings, evening is when deals happen. Plan with it, not against it.
Download Careem Black for client pickups
Turning up in a Careem Black says you know the city. A confused Uber ride says something different.
Have physical business cards
Exchanging business cards is still a genuine ritual in Dubai. Don't be the person fumbling with their phone.
Budget 40 minutes between meetings across the city
Dubai is bigger than it looks. DIFC to Marina is 35 minutes in traffic. Don't schedule back-to-back across districts.
